Historical pubs in Gloucester

"The Regal - JD Wetherspoon" in Gloucester, England, is a popular pub housed in a former cinema, offering a fascinating blend of history, architecture, and traditional pub culture. As part of the renowned Wetherspoon chain, famous for its affordable food and drinks as well as the repurposing of historic buildings, "The Regal" has held a prominent place in the heart of the city since its opening in 1996. The building itself began its journey as a cinema in 1939, but its completion was delayed by World War II, with the final touches only being made in 1955. This past as a venue for film and theater—where the Beatles performed in 1963, among others—still influences the ambiance today, making the pub a unique spot.

Wetherspoon pub with history

The interior of "The Regal" is a real eye-catcher: high ceilings, an open layout, and decor reminiscent of cinema's golden age create a unique atmosphere. A giant King Kong model hanging from the ceiling and surrounded by double-decker buses serves as a striking highlight that immediately captivates visitors. Additionally, historical photos and displays tell stories from the building's past—ranging from old films to performances by famous artists. The pub features several areas, including a raised platform that once served as the stage, as well as a spacious outdoor area overlooking Kings Square, particularly inviting in the summer.

Pub with traditional cuisine

Culinary offerings at "The Regal" adhere closely to the Wetherspoon concept, featuring a wide range of classic pub dishes freshly prepared daily. The Mixed Grill, a hearty dish with various meats, is especially popular among meat lovers and is served with crispy chips. The traditional English breakfast plate, showcasing bacon, sausages, and fried eggs, also attracts many guests looking to start their day with a substantial meal. For those preferring something lighter, options like the Chicken Burger, known for its juicy texture and spicy flair, are available. The kitchen also emphasizes vegetarian and vegan alternatives that do not compromise on flavor compared to the classics.

Accessible pub in England

The drinks menu is another strong reason to visit "The Regal." In addition to a large selection of cask ales from Greene King and other regional breweries, there’s a variety of ales that change regularly, delighting beer enthusiasts. The pub takes pride in its participation in Wetherspoon beer festivals, where rare and international varieties are served. Cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages, such as homemade lemonades, round out the offerings. The option to order via an app makes service quick and easy, even when the pub is busy—especially on weekends or during sports broadcasts.

Vibrant atmosphere in pub

The atmosphere at "The Regal" is vibrant and welcoming, characterized by a mix of regulars, tourists, and families. The pub is family-friendly, offering a children's menu and high chairs, making it a popular destination for outings. Meanwhile, the regular broadcasting of sporting events on large screens creates an exhilarating ambiance, particularly during football matches or the Six Nations Rugby tournament. The staff is known for its friendliness and efficiency, enhancing the overall experience.

Another advantage is accessibility: an elevator facilitates access for wheelchair users, and there are accessible restrooms, making "The Regal" welcoming to all. The outdoor area provides both shaded and sunny spots, making it an ideal place to observe the hustle and bustle of the city. Regular promotions like the Steak Club or the Curry Club ensure that regulars always find new reasons to return.

A small bird Flew in here And tried To go out the window but flew into the glass and Landed Then 2 Of the Chef's (men) Ran over to the bird and hit it over the head twice For no reason Whatsoever. Food also had dust in from them hitting the bird. Discusting. My 4 year old Was Watching all Of This And saying Hello Bird. there was several people Trying to Hold the windows open for the bird Aswell. these workers need to be stopped.

Long wait times for drinks and food, do they check sporting events and staff accordingly? From my experience the answer is no, poor management.

Ridiculous that there are no eggs. Only vegetarian breakfast option was beans on toast.

Large pub with plenty of floor space and seating. Usual wetherspoon prices and good selection of beers, very busy Saturday afternoon, people wandering about looking for seating. Large screen TV backed up with smaller sets around the building. Don't assume you will be served in turn so it's up to you to make sure that the usual suspects don't push in front.

Another Wetherspoons I've previously been to many years ago, however did not review at the time. This is one of two branches in Gloucester. The Regal is a large branch of Wetherspoons situated in an old Cinema building, in King's Square, on the northern side of the City Centre. There is a reasonable sized garden area out the back of the pub. The bar area and coffee machines are on the left hand side of the pub, as you walk down the stairs at the front. On this occasion, I ordered a Vegetarian Breakfast, and a pint of Wolf Brewery 'Granny Wouldn't Like It' Ale - 4.8%. Total cost was £7.88. £4.99 for the breakfast, and £2.89 for the beer. The pint arrived within a minute of ordering, very quick! Food was a bit slower, arriving around 13 minutes after ordering. The food was well present and cooked upon arrival. Despite the recent price rises, still one of the cheapest places in Gloucester centre for food and drink.
